The Woodstock Elementary School STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Lab and Makerspace is an exploratory learning space that strives to infuse the STEM disciplines into the broader curriculum. We have established a science, engineering and design learning lab in its own dedicated space, preparing our students today with the critical thinking, designing, engineering and problem solving skills they need to fill the jobs of tomorrow!
Of course I don't have any pictures of this doing this project with First Grade students, because we were too busy making our models. Here is the example they followed. Really important to get an image of the Earth from the poles so that the rotation is accurate!
As part of our Life science unit, second graders have been studying what makes good characteristics for a windblown seed. We culminated this unit with an engineering task in which the students created their own windblown seeds.
Lucie deLaBruere - of Create Make Learn fame - was kind enough to loan us the use of her new Carvey - a desktop CNC-for a few months to explore. Knowing that I love to bring woodworking to kids-and bring new technology kids- it seemed like a natural merging of the two. We are just beginning to explore what this could look like in our STEM lab setting.
